Perfectionism

“Perfectionism is a self-destructive and addictive belief system that fuels this primary thought:
If I look perfect, and do everything perfectly, I can avoid or minimize the painful feelings of shame, judgment, and blame.”

– Brené Brown

1492614623 1I’m sure you’ve been asked this a thousand times…

“I’m so impressed – how do you do it?!”

On the one hand, that question is SO satisfying as your inner perfectionist steps up to claim her gold medal. But on the other, you’re silently screaming that the pressure of trying to do it all is crushing you.

Your perfectionism shows up in your work. You probably find yourself working way more hours than your colleagues. Or you put off tasks to the last minute because you fear not being able to do them perfectly.

It might show up in your relationships. Have you ever gone into a tailspin because you wanted to plan the perfect party for a loved one but couldn’t pull it off?

Or it might show up within yourself – how you eat, dress, exercise, or maintain your home.

There’s simply no room for error.

You’ve been told that perfectionism is an illusion.

But it’s just not that simple!

Because you’re rewarded for your perfectionistic tendencies, they bring you praise, accolades, and promotions, to name a few. That’s not easy to walk away from!

Except you’re so tired.

And you also find yourself shying away from anything you might not be an expert at, making your life smaller and smaller. You don’t put yourself up for that promotion, go to that social event, or try out that new hobby you’re interested in because you’re afraid of looking stupid. So, you avoid anything that isn’t a sure thing.

It works for a while, but you’re getting lonelier by the day.

Perfectionism Img 2There’s a way out of this.

You won’t lose the edge that makes you successful, but you will lose that inner critic beating you down and limiting you from taking a chance.

When you silence that inner critic, it will no longer feel too daunting to apply for that new job, consider dating, send that vulnerable text, or try out that new hobby you’ve been interested in for years but haven’t dared to begin.

In our work, we will explore mental barriers feeding your perfectionism and start breaking them down. We will do this through goal-setting, cognitive restructuring, and values-based work. Every week, we will help you chip away at your perfectionistic tendencies, and you’ll notice yourself living a fuller life.

I will give you concrete steps to help you engage more with your life in a safe and supportive environment.

It’s time to get off the approval train and step into your own life.

I know you want to make a change but don’t know how. That’s okay… You’re in the right place!

Together, we’ll shift your punitive mindset into one of growth. You’ll take that trip you’ve always wanted to take, begin to try out new activities, and build more fulfilling, meaningful relationships.

You can stop feeling trapped in your own life.
